The Bridgeport Sound Tigers picked up a much needed two points Tuesday night with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Springfield Falcons. With the win, the Sound Tigers moved to within 5-points of a playoff spot in the East.
After a scoreless first period, Captain Matt Watkins got the Sound Tigers on the board with his 10th of the season as he beat Falcons netminder Curtis McElhinney for a 1-0 lead. Will Weber would respond for the Falcons just over four minutes later with his first of the season for a 1-1 tie.
Nino Niederreiter scored his 25th of the season just two minutes later for the Sound Tigers as they led 2-1. However, the Falcons would tie it up before the end of the frame on the powerplay as Jonathan Audy-Marchessault tallied his 18th of the season.
With no winner after 60 minutes, the two clubs headed to overtime. In the Extra-Frame David Ullstrom would beat McElhinney on the powerplay at 3:33 for the victory.
Rick DiPietro made 30 saves for the Sound Tigers to pick up the win, meanwhile McElhinney would turn aside 36 shots in a losing cause.
Bridgeport will play the Manchester Monarchs Friday evening, while the Falcons will face the Providence Bruins Friday evening starting at 7:05 EST.
