The St. John’s IceCaps tried to pull out a win in the final home game of the season for their fans, but the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had other plans as the IceCaps fell 5-4 in overtime Sunday at Mile One Centre.
Chad Kolarik got things started on the powerplay for the Penguins at the 17:49 mark of the first period with a powerplay goal, beating IceCaps goaltender Eddie Pasquale for the lead. With just two seconds left in the period, Josh Lunden fired one past Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen to tie the game at one.
It didn’t take the Penguins long to regain the lead as Dominik Uher managed to beat Pasquale just 2:53 into the second period. But, the lead was short lived as Ray Sawada drew the IceCaps even with his 13th of the season for a 2-2 game.
Julian Melchiori put the IceCaps ahead 3-2 at the 9:04 mark of the period as he tallied his first as an IceCap. But, Trevor Smith kept the game close as he tallied a goal of his own just 19-seconds later to tie it 3-3 after 40 minutes.
Will O’Neill got the IceCaps on the board first in the third with his third goal of the season for a 4-3 lead. However, the Penguins would once again tie the game as Kolarik beat Pasquale for his second of the night, and 30th of the season for a 4-4 game. Both clubs would fail to score anymore as the IceCaps final home game would be headed to overtime.
Unfortunately, the Penguins would spoil the last game IceCaps fans would see this season, as Kolarik finished off the hattrick with the only shot in overtime, as he beat Pasquale at the 2:09 mark for the 5-4 win.
6287 fans showed up Sunday to watch the final home game of the season for the IceCaps, captain Jason Jaffray was named first star of the game for the IceCaps. St. John’s will play its remaining 3-games on the road starting in Hamilton on Friday night against the Bulldogs.
