The Manchester Monarchs, AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, will be facing the Norfolk Admirals, AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs. The first round, the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, is a best-of-five matchup.
The Monarchs, making their 5th consecutive appearance in the playoffs and 12th in their 13 year history, rounded out their 2013-2014 regular season clinching the number one seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 48-19-3-6 and tallying 105 points. The Monarchs also captured the Atlantic Division title as well. Since the Monarchs found themselves seeded 1st in the Conference, that means they will have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. The Admirals, making their 10th playoff appearance, clinched the 8th and final seed in the Eastern Conference this past season with a record of 40-26-3-7 with 90 points. Norfolk also finished 3rd in the East Division for the regular season.
The teams faced each other four times during the 2013-2014 regular season. Two of the games were in November in Manchester, while the other two were in late February-early March down in Norfolk. Each team won two games, splitting the season series, 2-2.
Although the Monarchs get home-ice advantage, they will only host the Admirals twice. The Monarchs were able to pick whether to play two or three games at home. They opted for the first two games at home, probably because of traveling issues as well as other events happening at the Norfolk Scope around the same time.
The first round schedule goes as follows:
Game 1 – Friday, April 25th 7:00 @Manchester
Game 2 – Saturday, April 26th 7:00 @Manchester
Game 3 – Wednesday, April 30th 7:15 @Norfolk
Game 4* – Friday, May 2nd 7:30 @Norfolk
Game 5* – Saturday, May 3rd 7:15 @Norfolk
*= If Necessary
The Monarchs will look to start off their playoff series on a high note this Friday, April 25th for a 7:00 start at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, NH.
