The St. John’s IceCaps closed out 2013 at Mile One Centre on a winning note as they defeated the Syracuse Crunch with a 5-1 victory Wednesday evening.

Brenden Kichton struck first for the IceCaps at the 12:47 mark of the first period with his 5th of the season to put St. John’s up 1-0 after 20 minutes.

IceCaps defencmen Zach Redmond would double the IceCaps lead just over two minutes into the second period with a goal for a 2-0 lead. Kyle MacKinnon would then give the IceCaps a nice cushion just under 30-seconds later with his first of the season to put St. John’s up 3-0 after 40 minutes.

MacKinnon would tally his second of the night against Crunch goaltender Cedrick Desjardins just 24-seconds into the third frame for a 4-0 lead.

The Crunch would finally get on the board for the first time in the 2-game series at the 3:37 mark of the third period as Philip-Michael Devos tallied his first of the season to cut the lead to 4-1.

IceCaps captain Jason Jaffray would seal Syracuse’s fate with just over 2-minutes to go in the game as he tallied a short-handed marker to make it a 5-1 game.

Eddie Pasquale turned aside 25 of 26 shots for the IceCaps victory, meanwhile Cedrick Desjardins let in 5 goals on 36 shots in a losing cause.

The IceCaps swept the 2-game mini-series with a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night as well. The IceCaps will hit the road Thursday to travel to Hamilton where they will take on the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday. The team will play its final 5-games of 2013 on the road, finishing up in Springfield against the Falcons on New Year’s Eve.

The Crunch will head home where they will host the Rochester Americans from the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, New York on Saturday night.
