The Lake Erie Monsters used a short handed goal by Matt Hunwick in the third period to down the Toronto Marlies 2-1 Thursday evening.

The Marlies struck first in the game as Troy Bodie beat Monsters goaltender Calvin Pickard with just under a minute remaining in the first period on the powerplay to give the Marlies a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

In the second period, the Monsters would draw even with a powerplay goal of their own as Bryan Lerg beat Marlies netminder Christopher Gibson for his 10th of the season to knot the game up at one after 40 minutes.

Just before the half way mark of the third period, the Monsters found themselves down a man as Joey Hishon headed off for his third minor penalty of the game, this time for Unsportsmanlike conduct. However, the Monsters got lucky on this penalty kill as Hunwick snuck in and beat Gibson for the 2-1 lead while short handed.

The goal by Hunwick would prove to be enough as Pickard shut the door the rest of the way and the Monsters held on for the 2-1 victory.

Pickard made 30 saves, including 16 in the third period to secure the Monsters victory, meanwhile, Gibson turned aside 21 of 23 in the loss for the Marlies.

The win snapped the Monsters 2-game slide, and the Marlies 3-game win streak. As well, the Monsters picked up a crucial 2-points as it brings them within 2-points of the division leading Marlies.

The Monsters have another big test Friday as they host the Hamilton Bulldogs, game time is 7:30 Eastern Time. Meanwhile, the Marlies head home where they will face the Bulldogs at Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
