A penalty shot goal late in the first period by Tim Sestito proved to be the winner Monday afternoon as the Albany Devils downed the Adirondack Phantoms 4-1.

Joe Whitney got Albany on the board first, as he took a pass from Scott Timmins and wired it past Phantoms netminder Yann Danis for the 1-0 lead on the powerplay.

Just 3-minutes later, Tom Sestito was pulled down by Phantoms forward Ben Holmstrom and was awarded a penalty shot on the play. Sestito would make good use of the penalty shot opportunity as he fired a shot past Danis on his right side to put Albany up 2-0 after one.

In the second, the Devils would strike once again on the powerplay, as Scott Timmins picked up his second point of the night as he beat Danis for a goal of his own, and a 3-0 Devils lead.

Adirondack would finally get on the board in the third period as a shot from the point by Oliver Lauridsen hit Rob Bordson’s stick and found its way past Devils netminder, Scott Wedgewood to trim the lead to 3-1.

With just over 5-minutes to play, the Devils would put the game away as Tom Sestito re-directed a pass from Darcy Zajac past Danis for the 4-1 lead.

Wedgewood made 24 saves – including several big stops in the opening frame – to secure the victory for the Devils. Meanwhile, Danis turned aside 17 in the loss.

The Phantoms will travel to Pennsylvania to play a tough Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins team Friday night, meanwhile the Devils will fly to Virginia to take on the Norfolk Admirals as well on Friday. Attendance was 2222 Monday afternoon.
